Six years into their career, jazz-rock's noisiest, most mathematically obscure commandants, THE QUASH WAGON RECLUSION, sound exceedingly kinetic and singular as ever as they return with their first album in three years, the 47-minute abattoir of disembodied riffs and inscrutable intonations that is ORBAL. An unmistakable operation of their eponymous deconstructive-rock method, ORBAL features some of the band's eeriest soundscapes to date. Having past records and releases featured on radars as wide as stoner rock's theobelisk.net and Avant Music News, TQWR further with this release, DE TROP's own philosophy, in both excess and aversion to geographies and genres. ORBAL makes heavy use of itemized microtonality particular to De Trop founders, known as 'patatonal reduction, to create one of 2019's most eccentric rock and jazz records. What desert-rock godfather and maverick Mario Lalli initially described as "rad" has evolved into restless as TQWR continue to find ways to warp and perfect their already sui generis craft. Microtonal rock has never sounded as funereal and as rabid. ORBAL is here.
